TOP TEN TIPS FOR REMOTE LEARNING by Hadiza Mshelia

Well, things were definitely very different this time 9 months ago. We could go places without wearing masks and/or social distancing. But due to the outbreak of Covid, all academic institutions across the country transitioned to e-learning back in March of last school year. Since September, our district has adopted a Hybrid model which has students learning remotely at least 3 times a week. Here are some tips for you to become more adjusted and focused while learning from home:

  1. Wake up at least 20-30 minutes before your first period class: I mean, you don’t want to fall asleep during class and have the teacher call on you while you’re not aware of what’s happening #awkward!!

  2. Go to a desk or a table in your house: this is pretty self explanatory. A desk is a more focused place rather than your bed, the place where you sleep!

  3. Turn off all distractions: no TV, no video games, no phone.

  4. Always keep your camera on unless you’re excused or your teacher allows you to turn it off: the school as well as most teachers have stern policies on this resulting in removal of students during meetings, emailing parents or the students themselves, and even calling them out during class.

  5. Stay focused: follow along whether you are listening to a lesson from the teacher or you are asked to complete a google classroom assignment. Stay on task!

  6. Resist the urge to use your phone: yes, we get it, some of your friends may be in different groups than you are and you wish you were there with them at the moment, but there is a time and place for that.

  7. When you have a free period/lunch, try to spend it accordingly: let’s say it’s 40 minutes of free time (not lunch) and you have to do something that takes an hour. Instead, focus on completing your homework that has been assigned to you or future homework instead of napping. Of course if it’s your lunch period, take that much needed break from screen time and have something nutritious to eat.

  8. Try to eat breakfast before school so that you don’t have to hide it on camera: it’s more comfortable than having your classmates and teacher watch you eat.

  9. Check your school email daily: Your teacher may send you messages to let you know about missing work, to see how you are doing, to let you know about an upcoming test or assignment.

  10. Make sure you submit or mark assignments done on google classroom: This will not only keep you organized, but will also help your teacher see if you’re struggling or doing well with the content.

Good luck and enjoy remote learning!
