THE START OF THE ROARING TWENTIES by Hadiza Mshelia

Did it feel like yesterday when you were in elementary school watching popular Disney Channel and Nickelodeon shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, Big Time Rush, and iCarly? (Many Disney Channel fans won’t forget the famous line used by Disney stars “I’m (name) from (show) and you’re watching Disney Channel” while drawing the trademark Mickey Mouse ears. Today in 2019, this year and decade is going to be ending very soon. Now, us kids -- born around the time the shows Drake and Josh, That’s So Raven, and Zoey 101 had started airing -- will be learning to drive (which is most sophomores and some juniors), graduating high school, entering college, and starting the rest of our lives in the next decade. So, here’s some nostalgia from the 2010s that you may remember:

The first half of the 2010s decade introduced us to many popular artists such as Justin Bieber with one of his most well known songs “Baby.” This is currently the second most disliked video with a grand 10 million dislikes after the YouTube Rewind 2018 (which is a recap of what happened in the year 2018) which currently has a whopping approximate of 17 million dislikes. The Rewind currently holds the record of being the most disliked music video -- Rebecca Black’s “Friday” music video had a similar outcome to Bieber’s aforementioned song “Baby” and is still making music today and had became a well known vlogger. Besides these songs, many Disney Channel shows

Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, Jessie, Austin & Ally, and ANT Farm had started airing as well. The introduction of the English-Irish internationally known One Direction had gained many notable supporters such as Taylor Swift and the X Factor even after their split in early 2017. Other artists such as Jason DeRulo, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga,Ke$ha, Maroon 5, and Bruno Mars had a massive breakout due to their success in their music careers. Many gaming websites such as MineCraft, and WebKinz Club Penguin were most played by children all over the world after the latter’s shutting down in 2017. Finally, the dances that were made during the early 2010s were the Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style with a combined over billions of views.

The second half of the 2010s decade consisted of the breakout between both Nickelodeon and Disney Channel stars Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, the Jonas Brothers, and Ariana Grande into worldwide singers that have at some point their albums at a high spot at Billboard music ratings. In 2017, one of the world’s best known video games, Fortnite which has gained many careers out of YouTubers/streamers, and most notably Ninja who has 22 million subscribers. The social media app, TikTok which was formerly known as “Musical.ly” has been introduced as mostly a place for memes and lip-syncing videos. Also, in 2016, there has been massive hype following the Mannequin Challenge, clowns, Pokemon Go, and the water bottle flipping challenge which some schools have banned along with T-posing.

The election of President Donald Trump has also been largely criticized due to his stark contrast of President Barack Obama. Recently, a new streaming site called DisneyPlus has been made for viewing purposes, especially for the late 90s- early to mid 2000s to relive their childhood. That’s not the only thing that has been introduced for them, Netflix and Nickelodeon had signed a deal to put back shows such as “Victorious” and “Big Time Rush.”

The 2010s have been a very good decade. We can’t wait for what the 2020s bring for us!
