SUPPORT, DEEP BREATHS, AND BALANCE by Gillian Gold

“It is in these four years [of high school] that students lean into newly discovered passions and interests” And maybe one of these passions will become your future profession. After all, that was the case for Alyssa Zelicof, our new guidance counselor. In the last few months of her high school experience, Ms. Zelicof interned with her middle school guidance counselor, and “was immediately drawn to the all-encompassing role of working with students in a school setting.” The role of the counselor includes being a student advocate and focusing on social-emotional well being, academical goals, and interpersonal relationships. “Being able to provide this type of support for my students is so much of why I love this role,” says Ms. Zelicof.

Growing up in Westchester County herself, Ms. Zelicof had always been aware of Ardsley’s stellar reputation. She immediately felt welcomed into the community and enjoys working with the students, faculty, staff, and families. The school spirit has stood out to Ms. Zelicof as a special aspect of the Ardsley community. “The combination of academic excellence and school spirit creates a truly unique and vibrant atmosphere.”

Ms. Zelicof has found that “managing stress is all about finding the right balance for each individual student.” For seniors going through the college process, she emphasizes the importance of keeping a healthy perspective throughout the process: “a dream school can be many places!”

When Ms. Zelicof is not providing guidance to Ardsley students, she explores the city, since she lives in Manhattan. She is also currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education. Like her students, she knows firsthand, “the importance of maintaining a healthy balance of fun, friendships, a professional life, and academic responsibilities.”

One valuable piece of advice Ms. Zelicof has to offer is to “take a step back, a deep breath and enjoy each moment. Don’t be afraid to seek support and help from friends, family members, and school faculty along the way.” And if you ever need to sweeten your day, Ms. Zelicof always keeps a large jar of candy in her office!
