FINDING JOY IN QUARANTINE by Quinn Blaise

The coronavirus pandemic, as we all know, has brought us many unexpected experiences, such as wearing masks and learning from home. Additionally, it has caused everyones’ lives to change drastically. Whether it’s the exhausting, yet crucial, life of a healthcare worker or simply adjusting to life in quarantine, in a time like this, we all need some joy in our lives. During this unprecedented time, many are turning to a few new activities to lift theirs and others’ spirits, like putting rainbows and teddy bears in their windows and posting old senior photos.

As we’ve been settling into quarantine, children around the world have been trying to spread joy through the form of rainbows! Kids have been drawing pictures of rainbows and taping them up in their windows to show support for the healthcare workers putting themselves at risk for the wellbeing of others. This trend has also been helpful in facilitating some family fun. People have been joining Facebook groups, posting photos of their rainbows to create a neighborhood scavenger hunt. Kids can follow a map posted in the Facebook group or via Rainbow Connection on Google Maps to walk around their neighborhoods and spot the various rainbows in others’ windows!

The same trend is done with teddy bears too. Many kids are putting teddy bears and other stuffed animals in their windows to spread positivity and reassurance. During such an unsure and frightening time, many are seeking fun activities to distract themselves with. Thus, tens of thousands of people are going on teddy bear scavenger hunts, taking photos of some of their most favorite or most unusual finds. Also, with most of us stuck at home, many might be feeling isolated and alone. But, this challenge helps to show others that they are not alone, and we are all in this together.

Additionally, as an effect of coronavirus and quarantine, schools have been implementing at home learning programs and curriculums. Students worldwide have had to adjust themselves to completing schoolwork from their homes, flipping their typical school routine completely upside down. But, not only have students been missing out on in-class learning, but this year’s seniors have unfortunately been missing out on their end of senior year activities. To show their support for the class of 2020, many parents have been posting their senior own photos on Facebook. Many people have found it enjoyable to reminisce upon their own high school experiences and seeing those of others as well.

Overall, the coronavirus pandemic has had countless effects on our lives, both major and minor. In such a unique time in our lives, it is important to appreciate those continuing to work to keep us safe and healthy, as well as finding something fun to do with our families. Taking part in activities like these has helped communities of people worldwide connect from a safe distance.
