ARDSLEY STUDENTS MAKING MASKS by Fiker Zewdie

America’s current state has left us shattered and locked within our homes. In a matter of days, our high school lives were left completely transformed. Many students were looking forward to finishing off their school year strong.

In a time where we are all confined within the walls of our homes and shifting to a digital community, the efforts of the community didn’t go unnoticed. For Ardsley Masks, this battle didn’t restrict their ability to spread kindness and give back to the community. Though this didn’t come easy to them, they have been making an effort to provide residents of the Rivertowns masks for free.

This all started with an idea from Joyce Lu, who will be a junior year next year. She began with one sewing machine (and later had another donated to her). As she realized the enormous demand for masks, however, Joyce realized she could not work alone. Her team grew, and now, Lu works with Ardsley High School students Lily Farberman and Alexandra Wang.

Since the beginning of Ardsley Masks, there has been great success and a visible impact on the community. They made about 1,147 masks and delivered them to 256 families. But lots of work went into this behind the scenes. Lu spoke to me recently regarding the specifics of these efforts.

Lu explained that she, Farberman, and Wang use donated bedsheets and elastic to make masks in large quantities. The effort of these girls is evident in the thousands of masks they produced. For me personally, my family was in need of masks just to go outside and there was such a sense of security knowing that I had these masks for my whole family. The girls put so much work and dedication into their work despite their challenges. They even had 99 people messaging the Ardsley Marks Instagram account for masks one night.

"They made about 1,147 masks and delivered them to 256 families."

According to Lu, it is the support and love from the community that keeps her going. I surely can’t wait to see what more we can expect from the community moving forward as we unite during these challenging times and I wish that uplifting actions as these multiply in Ardsley for the years to come. Groups like Ardsley Masks truly embody what it means to be a member of the Ardsley High School community.
