A RECORD BREAKING TEAM by Maya Levine

The Ardsley Girls Varsity Volleyball team has had the most incredible season by far and have certainly made Ardsley history. After having a near perfect season, they came out strong in there second trip to the Section Championship this year. They were prepared to play Byram Hills, a really good team, and definitely showed them no mercy considering Byram cracked under pressure and allowed our girls to sweep them for the two-peat Section title.

With this confidence, Ardsley was able to sweep Red Hook in the regional semi finals to finally play in the regional game they had been waiting all year for. Last year, Owego ended our volleyball season in the Regional Championship and the girls have been preparing for this game ever since.

Knowing they had to be stronger and faster to beat Owego, the girls committed to 6:30 am Friday morning workouts with Mr. Russo, as well as every other day work outs over the summer. Hungry for revenge, they were ready to take on Owego in Corning, New York to play in the Regional finals. Although off to a bumpy start, with Owego up 2 sets to none, Ardsley wasn’t ready to give up yet and beat them in the 3rd set 26-24. After this, they knew the game was as good as theirs.

In the last couple sets before victory, the girls relied on all those workouts and mile runs considering Owego was getting tired. Lexie Meltzer remarks how they “left everything on the floor to end their season and felt on top of the world to finally get their revenge”. After defeating Owego in the Regional Finals, AVVB was off to the State championships facing teams they have never heard of. Despite all odds, the team did something that has never been done before: went 6-0 in the State Final four. This allowed them to stay the next day for the State championship against the defending champs from Westhill.

We beat them in both sets on day one, not knowing they would come back in the finals to sweep Ardsley for the State Championship. Although the season didn’t end in the way the girls had hoped, they are still the first team in Ardsley history to make it past the final 4 for the State title. On top of this, almost every starter on the team got The All Section award and 3 players received all State awards. These are very important milestones that should not go unrecognized for our hardworking volleyball team. Many lessons have been learned from their experience and the girls are ready to come back next year for their revenge!
